Canton Tower at sunset: the icon of Guangzhou
La Canton Tower 广州塔 (Canton Tower) es the tallest building in the city at 604 meters And, without a doubt, the most important symbol of Guangzhou. Its distinctive "woman's waist" silhouette (hence its affectionate nickname of Xiao Man Yao) makes it unmistakable on the skyline. At night It is illuminated with a display of colored lights which is constantly changing and is the first thing you'll want to photograph when you arrive in Canton.

We recommend you go up just before sunset To experience the changing light: to see the city by day, how the sun sets and how the skyscrapers light up one by one. The views are brutal and you can see everything perfectly Flower Square, the Opera House, the Pearl River, and the Zhujiang New Town skylineTickets can be purchased on-site, but we recommend Book them in advance on Trip.com to avoid queues. Remember to bring your passport: it is mandatory for entry.

💡 Tip Local Guide: If you dare, the tower has extra experiences like the outdoor observatory at 488m (the tallest in the world) or the Bubble Tram At 455 meters high. We decided to take the Bubble Tram, which does a 360º tour around the entire tower, but be warned that the glass isn't very clear and the view is much better from the observatory (although the view isn't of the whole city).
Shamian Island: the colonial architecture of Canton
La Shamian Island (沙面) It is one of the areas with the most history and emotional significance in Guangzhou. This small island in the Pearl River was once a British and French colonial concession between 1859 and World War IIand today it is preserved as a open-air museum of 19th-century European architectureNeoclassical mansions, Catholic churches, former banks and consulates, all surrounded by its unmistakable centuries-old banyan trees with roots along the avenues. As you stroll, notice the bronze statues, in the restored carriage of the Orient Express converted into a restaurant and the curious Starbucks with a Harry Potter aesthetic, perfect for stopping for a drink: the perfect respite within a megacity of 18 million inhabitants.

Interesting fact: for decades, Shamian was the global epicenter of international adoptions of Chinese girlsbecause the US Consulate and the iconic White Swan Hotel (白天鹅宾馆), where thousands of foreign families were staying.
Chen Family Ancestral Temple: The Folk Art Museum
El Chen Family Ancestral Temple (陈家祠), also known as Chen Clan AcademyIt is one of the most spectacular places to see in Guangzhou. It was built in 1894 by the 72 Chen families of Guangdong province so that their sons could study for the imperial examinations and become officials of the emperor. Today it houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum. The Entry costs about 10 yuan (€1,30) and is easily accessible with the Subway line 1 (Chen Clan Academy stop), although we went by Didi.

What is most impressive is the handcrafted decoration in every cornerPolychrome ceramic figures on the rooftops, wooden carvings of dragons, stone sculptures, hand-painted frescoes, and inner courtyards with bonsai trees. It's basically a catalog in stone and wood of all the traditional arts of southern China and a perfect example of Cantonese architecture.
Dim sum at Tao Tao Ju: the best way to start the day in Guangzhou
You can't leave Guangzhou without enjoying a good dim sumAnd the most legendary place to do it is Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居), one of the city's oldest restaurants, now with several locations throughout Guangzhou. So if you want a truly authentic Cantonese experience, you've come to the right place. the world's birthplace of dim sumThese are the dishes we ordered and that we absolutely recommend:
- Steamed buns filled with pork (char siu bao): classic fluffy Cantonese barbecue pork fillings.
- Shrimp siu mai topped with caviar: Open dumplings filled with prawns and topped with black caviar, the gourmet version of the classic.
- Roast duck Cantonese style: with crispy and caramelized skin, unlike Peking duck.
- Sweet and sour pork served on ice: Our favorite, hands down. A spectacular presentation and a stunning contrast between the ice and the caramelized elements.
- Cantonese egg tarts (dan tat): The perfect ending. Creamy, warm, and with flaky pastry.

We walked from our hotel to the Beijing Road (Inside a shopping mall) around 15:00 PM and we still had to wait about 15 minutes. If you go during rush hour, you'll probably have to wait longer.
Yongqing Fang and Bruce Lee's ancestral home
The historic district of Yongqing Fang (永庆坊) It's one of the most charming spots to see in Guangzhou. It's a labyrinth of traditional alleyways in the Liwan district which has been carefully restored, preserving the traditional style of the houses qilou (shophouses) mixed with designer cafes, art galleries, independent shops and modern murals. The contrast between old and new works incredibly well.

Hidden within this neighborhood is one of the most exciting visits for film fans: the Bruce Lee Ancestral House (李小龙祖居)This is the family home of Bruce Lee's father, where the legendary actor spent part of his childhood. The house has been preserved and can be visited free of charge: inside you will find photos, movie posters, personal memorabilia, and videos of the legend of kung fu.

Beijing Road: the commercial heart of Guangzhou
Beijing Road (北京路) It's Guangzhou's most famous pedestrian shopping street. Here you'll find Local shops, international brands, restaurants, street food, traditional sweets and a great atmosphere (especially at night). The most curious thing about this street is that right on the ground, under glass panels, the original ancient pavements from various dynasties (Tang, Song, Ming…), one on top of the other, like an open history book beneath your feet.

People will constantly approach you on the street. Street vendors offering counterfeit designer watches and handbags (Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Gucci…). We show it to you in the video; it's part of the local culture. Just smile and keep walking if you're not interested. It's perfect to stroll along at nightfall, when the LED signs illuminate the entire street. Our hotel is right here, so it was our base for exploring every day. Highly recommended!
Flower Square and Guangzhou Opera House
La Flower Square (花城广场, Huacheng Square) It is the large central square of the modern district of Zhujiang New Town and the heart of contemporary Guangzhou. It's a vast space offering views of several iconic skyscrapers, the Pearl River, and, in the distance, the imposing Canton Tower. This stroll alone is worthwhile to grasp the monumental scale of the city. Right next to the square is the Guangzhou Opera House (广州大剧院), designed by the world-famous architect Zaha HadidIts design mimics two stones polished by the Pearl River: curved lines and a futuristic facade. Even if you don't go inside for a show, it's absolutely worth seeing from the outside.

Dongshankou: the most cool from Guangzhou
Si Yongqing Fang is the historic and restored face of Guangzhou, Dongshankou (东山口) is its most creative, alternative and photogenic versionWhat is most surprising about this neighborhood is its unique architecture: residential mansions from the 20s and 30s built in red brick, with a curious mix of European styles (Roman-inspired columns, arches, balustrades, etc.) erected by returning Chinese who came back wealthy from abroad. The result is a unique corner in all of China, completely different from the rest of the city.

Today these houses are filled with Specialty coffee shops, vintage stores, art galleries, independent fashion brands, and bookstoresIt's a favorite among local youth and Chinese content creators. We took the opportunity to stroll around at a leisurely pace and discover several Unique stores that you won't find in any shopping mall. and eat a good one wonton soup to recover from the poisoning of the previous day.
More things to see and do in Guangzhou
As we mentioned, food poisoning cut our visit short, and we had to cancel several plans. If you have more time in Guangzhou, here are some other suggestions. Things to do in Guangzhou Highly recommended:
